The WA State Government has launched its WA Strategy to Respond to the Abuse of Older People (Elder Abuse). The draft strategy, outlines the priorities, actions and outcomes needed to stamp out elder abuse, and is open for public comment until 24 July 2019.

Our CEO Diedre Timms, Prevention of Family and Domestic Violence Minister Simone McGurk and Chief Operating Officer of Bankwest’s personal and business banking division launched the Government’s draft strategy to tackle the issue and raise awareness of financial elder abuse.

Today we began a partnership with Legal Aid WA to enhance the support for those calling the Elder Abuse Helpline. Advocare Advocates and Legal Aid Lawyers will also be able to directly contact each other to obtain information about legal issues and refer clients for non-legal advocacy support and referral.

New laws will compel all aged care providers to sign and conform to a single, strengthened Charter of Rights released this week under the Government’s latest aged care quality and safety reforms.

The National Plan to Respond to the Abuse of Older Australians (Elder Abuse) 2019-2023 was released today.
Our CEO Diedre Timms, who is also co-chair of Elder Abuse Action Australia (EAAA) was invited to the event to respond to the plan launched by the Attorney general, the Hon Christian Porter and MCd by Dr Kay Patterson, Age Discrimination Commissioner.

The Minister for Senior Australians and Aged Care Hon Ken Wyatt AM MP launched the ‘Talk to Us First’ training program at Advocare, developed by Altura Learning on behalf of the Older Persons Advocacy Network (OPAN), to increase awareness of aged care providers about consumers’ rights and the value that advocacy services can bring to aged care. Minister Wyatt also launched OPAN’s ‘National Elder Abuse Prevention and Advocacy Framework’ which provides a basis for nationally consistent approaches to elder abuse support and prevention.
