Your time is the greatest gift this Christmas! A message from Advocare CEO, Bev Jowle.
For many older Australians, the festive season can be a mixed bag of emotions. Often, if they are isolated, there can be a sting of loneliness at this time. So, with this in mind, how can we help support older people this Christmas?
Be aware: Acknowledging that people feel lonely is the first important step. If someone has recently lost a partner or long-term friend, their first Christmas can be hard. Instead of ignoring it and thinking that will make them feel better, allow them to talk about that person, then tell them that you’re glad they’re here and you understand how hard it is.
Include them: Make sure you include older generations in the planning of family gatherings and include their choices in the day, whether that’s through food, music or tradition. It will mean the world.
Check in: If you have an older neighbour who lives on their own, be sure to ask them if they’d like to come over for a drink or a meal. It’s a small gesture, but one that could be the highlight of their holiday season. Similarly, if you have someone living in aged care, take the time to visit. It’s only an hour of your time but could make a huge difference to their mental health.
If you are an older person who’s feeling lonely, please don’t be afraid to reach out and tell someone how you’re feeling. There is support available or look for activities in your local community.
