Inge is one of the newest volunteers in our Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme (ACVVS). Our volunteer coordinators were very pleased to connect Inge with her first client, Therese, however, the client got more than she bargained for – an unexpected furry bundle of joy added into the mix!
The bonus in this scenario is four-month-old Ollie, Inge’s wonderful little puppy who’s full of life and love for everyone (pictured below with Therese). Not surprisingly Therese is a big fan after just a few months of visiting by the ACVVS duo.
We asked volunteer Inge how she knows her visits to her older client, and new friend, are making a difference.
“I can see that she is smiling and laughing more now compared to when I first met her – especially now I’m bringing my puppy to visit. I think she enjoys Ollie’s company and looks forward to our visits. When I say, ‘See you next week’, she will say ‘Yes, next Tuesday’ and follow with the question ‘You’re bringing Ollie with you. right?’
I am proud to be able to a make a difference in someone else’s life just by visiting and talking to them. It really is a life-changing experience – for me and my pet, too.”
If you’re thinking about volunteering but still aren’t sure, Inge says, “Don’t hesitate any longer. Give volunteering a go, it’s only an hour or two a week, or a fortnight.”
