From 1 July there will be changes to our Volunteer Visitors program – starting with a new name! The Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme (ACVVS) will continue the amazing work of CVS, providing friendship and companionship to socially isolated and/or lonely older people receiving or waiting for, aged care services.
In making the move to ‘ACVVS’, Advocare will be providing additional places to older people in Perth, building further on what our program’s achieved over the last four years. And we’re also pleased to announce for the first time, volunteer services will be open to older clients who live in the South West region, which means we’ll be looking out to attract local potential volunteer visitors, too.
We know the devastating health effects of loneliness can include functional decline, premature death and health risks equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes a day. Our volunteer program is vital in helping overcome social isolation for older Western Australians.
If you are interested in receiving a visitor or would like to join our wonderful team of volunteers reach out to us at volunteer@advocare.org.au
Aleesha & Julie’s blooming friendship
One of our Community Development Coordinators, Michelle, captured this magical moment when volunteer and Aleesha and client Julie met for the first time. It was International Women’s Day and Aleesha decided to mark the occasion with a bunch of beautiful flowers.
Julie was simply overwhelmed by the gift and her volunteer’s thoughtfulness. She shared how very honoured and worthy as a person she felt to receive them.
Aleesha our volunteer, was also surprised and visibly moved by how such a small gesture had made such a difference to Julie’s day. (Pictured left to right: Aleesha and Julie with those day-changing blooms.)
